Assertiveness

I received several emails regarding the 'joy stealers' post, asking about assertiveness. The test you will find at this addy is a pretty good indicator of where you stand. You tell me yours, and I'll tell you mine. :)

Are you a human doormat? Do you say "yes" when you mean "no"? Do you keep your opinions to yourself for fear of upsetting or confronting others? Find out if you stand up for yourself as much as you should with the Assertiveness Test.

Assertiveness is the ability to formulate and communicate one's own thoughts, opinions and wishes in a clear, direct, and non-aggressive way. This test determines whether a lack of assertiveness or weak communication skills may be keeping you from fulfilling your potential and reaching your goals.

    According to your results on the Assertiveness Test, you seem to be doing relatively well in terms of standing up for yourself. In most day-to-day situations, you possess the necessary skills and inner confidence to tell others what you need, think or want. There is, however, room for improvement.

    We all have room for improvement, and that's not bad for a female's response. My score was 87, and it says I'm doing pretty good on the assertive scale.

  • I only got a 57. I really tend to think of myself as assertive. I mean, if the french fries aren't hot, I always send them back and ask for fresh ones:)

  • I got a 57. I'm sort of a mixed bag of assertiveness - I mean, if you're a company rep who's charged my credit card without authorization, watch out!! If you're a police officer and have written me a ticket unjustly, hold on to your holster! But if you're a waiter and the steak isn't so good, I'll eat it and still tip you. If you're my boss and you're underpaying me, I'll be thankful for the job. :)

    My score was 68 but I don't think I am overly assertive, well maybe sometimes.

    Now I have some questions, Johnny

    What would a person with a score of 100% assertiveness look like? I can't imagine.

    Does a person need to be highly assertive to reach their potential goals or can they just chip away at them? Perhaps the bigger the goal the more assertive one needs to be?

  • John, you do me proud. :) I like your blog too and visit most every day. 82 is a fine score. When one is up there with Charles, one is plain obnoxious. ;)

    Pam, you are definitely an assertive female. :) It's your style, nothing wrong with it and having to be independent could have something to do with it ..

    but, after hearing your childhood stories, I think it started at birth. lol

    Di, I think a 100% assertive person would be impossible to live with. lol Some jobs require one to be quite assertive but, in some, that's a drawback. Life is full of all kinds of boat floaters and thats why I love people so much and why cloning won't be a good thing. Each person is unique and full of surprises, and that's just right. God knows what He is doing. :)

    I think your score is just about right for a woman.. you are not a door mat but you're not a 'ba$$ breaker' either. :) I do not find you 'overly assertive' at all. Could we have been friends this long? ;) I do not know where that would begin though .. a 95% maybe.
